Journal of Natural Products : “Silymarin Suppresses Cellular Inflammation By Inducing Reparative Stress Signaling.”
Amanita phalloides is better known as the death cap for good reason. It’s responsible for most of the deaths from eating foraged mushrooms worldwide each year. Eating it can lead to liver damage and even liver failure. But silymarin has been helpful, and at least one clinical trial is underway.
They are seen in very high numbers in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease, meaning that milk thistle could potentially be used to help treat this difficult condition ( 21 ).
Milk thistle is available as a supplement from many health food stores. There is no standard dose of milk thistle, so it is best to read the dosage suggested on the packaging.
Initial animal research conducted in 2016 found that silymarin caused weight loss in mice that were fed a diet intended to cause weight gain.
In a low-quality observational study of over 600 people, a water-soluble Silymarin extract (420 mg/day) over 11 months lowered high liver enzymes and bilirubin in those with alcoholic liver disease .
